Divorce

Divorce is an unpleasant and messy undertaking. I've heard this, and I have some personal experience as well. Most of my life I've heard it expressed that this is largely a problem of modern life, but the first record of a legal divorce in what is now the US is dated on this day in 1643. Petitioner Anne Clarke of the Massachusetts Bay Colony was granted a divorce from her absent and adulterous husband Denis by the Quarter Court of Boston. Needless to say, there have been many more recent comments, and at least one far older, on Divorce. - Armour Van Horn

So many persons who think divorce a panacea for every ill find out, when they try it, that remedy is worse than the disease.
- Dorothea Dix, 1802 - 1877

Being divorced is like being hit by a Mack truck. If you live through it, you start looking very carefully to the right and to the left.
- Jean Kerr, 1923 - 2003

Divorce is probably of nearly the same date as marriage. I believe, however, that marriage is some weeks the more ancient.
- François-Marie Arouet (Voltaire), 1694 - 1778

Lovers' quarrels are not generally about money. Divorce cases generally are.
- Mason Cooley, 1927 - 2002

What a holler would ensue if people had to pay the minister as much to marry them as they have to pay a lawyer to get them a divorce.
- Claire Trevor, 1910 - 2000

A Roman divorced from his wife, being highly blamed by his friends, who demanded, "Was she not chaste? Was she not fair? Was she not fruitful?" holding out his shoe, asked them whether it was not new and well made. "Yet," added he, "none of you can tell where it pinches me."
- Plutarch
